Stones refueled
in isles SundaySO, did you see the Rolling Stones when they were in town Sunday? You didn't? Well, Amy Snyder did. She's the customer service representative for Circle Rainbow Aviation at the airport. Her company supervised the refueling stop the Stones plane had Sunday morning before proceeding on to Panama City for more fuel and then Buenos Aires. They'll do several concerts in South America before proceeding to Montreal. Meanwhile, at Honolulu Airport, Amy got permission from Customs to pick up Mick Jagger and the boys and take them to the Rainbow Aviation facility, where they enjoyed the chance to stretch their legs and found themselves listening to another of the Stones, D.J. Jay Stone, on 107.9, the oldies station. Since that station's Tom Moffatt was local promoter for the Stones' dynamite "Bridges to Babylon" concert at Aloha Stadium, chances are they heard at least one of their own tunes before being shuttled back to their plane ...
CHRISTMAS is just nine months away, and for those who like to plan ahead, Sub-Zero Distributors has a cool gift idea you might like to start considering. Feeling lucky, punk?
WHEN muffled gunshots were heard at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, HPD officers showed up to investigate. They were relieved to find not a gun battle, but the new "toy" at the Royal Hawaiian Shooting Club. The firm recently added a magnum series. The .44 magnums make more noise than you'd think and also pack a wallop for the shooter. Club CEO Marvin Silverman says, "The customers nearly spin around after firing. And they love the rush of power they get -- you can see it on their faces." G.M. Warren Kahapea, an ex-cop himself, invited the officers to come in and give the new babies a try, much to the delight of the ubiquitous Japanese tourists who snapped away with their cameras as the cops blew away targets like Clint Eastwood in "Dirty Harry." ...ON her return from a Washington, D.C., trip to help file petitions to legalize nonhallucinogenic industrial hemp as an agricultural crop, Rep. Cynthia Thielen sent a memo to all State Representatives and Senators. She wanted to dispel any rumors that despite having a black eye and arm injury, the DEA didn't knock her down or twist her arm regarding her stance. She merely tripped on a slippery marble staircase while in D.C. When I playfully asked if she'd been perhaps smoking anything at the time she slipped, she took the opportunity to explain how industrial hemp isn't a drug but could be very useful, especially in Hawaii, as a means of economic development. But aren't admitted dopesters Willie Nelson and Woody Harrelson pushing hemp as well? They are, she admitted, but wished they'd stop as they're doing more harm than good ...
Honey of a deal for Sapp
WHEN Tampa Bay Buccaneers tackle Warren Sapp is selected to play in the 1999 Pro Bowl game, as he most surely will be, he may well choose to upgrade to the $5,000 a night Presidential Suite at the Ihilani Resort & Spa. You see, Sapp just signed a six-year, $36 million deal making him the highest paid defensive player in NFL history. He has a bit of a history at the Ihilani also, since he was married there and then honeymooned on Lanai following this year's game ...
