Nakama, Ueki
outstanding state lifters

Nicola Nakama and Brandon Ueki were named the outstanding lifters after record-setting performances at the Hawaii State Weightlifting Championships this weekend at the Nuuanu YMCA.

Nakama won the state title in the women's 128-pound class with records in the snatch (115 pounds), jerk (154 pounds) and total (270 pounds).

Ueki won the men's 123-pound state title with records in the snatch (143 pounds), jerk (193) and total (336).

Other state women's winners were: Natalie Mew (106 pound division), Marline Dumaran (177) and Julie Corpuz (152).

Other state men's champions were: Shawn Patao (103-pound division); Gary Kawamura (136), Joseph Hajiro (152), Michael Harada (187) and Brett Radcliff (207).

FOUR-WAY TIE: Four teams were tied atop the leader board after the first day of the two-day Aloha Section PGA Pro-Pro Championship yesterday at Hualalai Golf Course on the Big Island.

The teams of Michael Castillo-Ron Castillo Jr., Ken Springer-Kevin Ralbovsky, Forest Watson-Mark Weatherwax and Jeffrey Leavitt-Joey Castillo all were at four-under 68.

The second round of the four-ball stroke play event was to be played today.

One stroke back was the team of Sam Ainslie and John Freitas.

At 70 were Ron Castillo Sr. and Henry Sieradzki; Ronald Huffman and Shannon Pule, and Jay Yasumishi and Jeff Ferry.

KARATE CHAMPIONS: Elisa Au, a junior at Punahou and the youngest member of the USA Team at the Karate World Championships in Orlando, Fla., won five gold medals during the competition among 38 countries at the Disney World Sports Complex.

Au won gold medals in Team Kata, Team Kobudo (weapons); Team Kumite (sparring) and Long Weapons and Kumite.

Barbara Chinen took six gold medals (Team Kata, Team Kobudo, Team Kumite, Short Weapons, Kata and Kumite).

Sumiko Kobayashi had two gold medals (Team Kata and Team Kobudo).

Among Hawaii's men, George Kotaka won five gold medals (Kata, Kumite, Kobudo, Team Kobudo and Team Kata).

SEA WARRIORS WIN: Lyrissa Sagawa went 4-for-4 as Hawaii Pacific University beat Lewis & Clark College, 10-4, in a college softball game yesterday at the Sea Warriors' field.

The second game was rained out.

VULCANS TAKE TITLE: The University of Hawaii-Hilo softball team won its Kona Classic tournament championship with a 1-0 victory over Southern California College yesterday at Kailua-Kona on the Big Island.
