It doesn't take much effort for Lani Chang to get students motivated in extracurricular clubs and activities, especially when they're enthusiastic. Encouraging zest for learning
"I'm really having such a wonderful year," said Chang, who's in her sixth year teaching sixth grade at Waiahole Elementary School. Sixth graders are excited about learning, and "it makes it easy for me to do my job in the classroom."
Too keep up with such inquisitive minds, Chang began new clubs this year. In October, she started chess classes and a math club for students to help them develop stronger problem-solving skills.
She also recently formed a new literary circle, or book club, which meets every other Friday during lunch hour. Students read a book of their choice for two weeks and then share critiques, art projects based on the books, and oral presentations. Sometimes they come dressed as a character in a book.
Chang said she's seen a marked improvement in students' public-speaking skills. Best of all, they've gained confidence and self-esteem.
"It's been really working out well," she said. Even the shyest of students break out of their shells and get excited about sharing their projects.
Principal Linda Kishimoto said Chang knows that learning doesn't just come from reading textbooks. "It's just that she really tries to make learning meaningful," Kishimoto said. "She's just really an outstanding teacher."
