Volunteer activities dictate Casey Leavitt's life, and she'll have it no other way. Making her dream come true
The 17-year-old Saint Francis senior is active in the school's Campus Ministry program, which plans retreats, celebrates monthly Mass, and engages in activities such as AIDS awareness events.
Leavitt also performs with the nonprofit Power Teens, sponsored by Hale Kipa. The group stages skits dealing with drug and alcohol awareness at various intermediate schools on the island.
Volunteering at the school's day-care center, with her own church group, and at the Taste of Honolulu event for Easter Seals, and schoolwork take up much of the rest of her time.
For her effort, Leavitt was nominated as the school's candidate for the national Prudential Spirit of Community Award and was presented the Aloha Queen crown at Saint Francis' Aloha Show this year. "It was a dream I've had since the eighth grade," she said.
Counselor Julie Halpern said Leavitt deserves more than recognition for being an outstanding student and community member.
"She's a great, all-around student ... with a pleasant, outgoing personality," Halpern said.
Leavitt said no recognition is necessary for the work she willingly performs.
"Volunteering is a really great feeling," she said, "(Knowing) that you're doing really great work."
