in U.S. ChampionshipsMichael Keopuhiwa of Pearl City was stopped by Gerald Tucker of Cincinnati in the first round of a 112-pound bout.
Carl Phillips Jr. of Wahiawa lost a 132-pound decision to Jason Ingwaldson of Las Vegas.
PRO-PRO GOLF ON BIG ISLAND: The Aloha Section PGA's 1998 Pro-Pro Championship will be played Sunday and Monday at the Hualalai Golf Course on the Big Island.
There is a $5,000 purse for the 36-hole four-ball stroke-play event, with 30 teams expected to play.
The defending champions are Dean Prince from Maui and Dan Nishimoto from Kauai. Other contenders include Dennis Rose and Joe Root, brothers Michael and Ron Castillo Jr., Hilo's Rodney Acia and Kevin Hayashi and the Tommy Hines-Marc Orlowski tandem.
WAC HONORS TO MORENZ, GENTLE: Tia Morenz and Kelly Gentle of the University of Hawaii softball team have been named the Western Athletic Conference player and pitcher of the week, respectively.
Morenz went 16-for-32 and scored 14 runs for the Wahine, who won nine games last week. She was named MVP in the Bank of Hawaii Invitational Tournament.
Gentle pitched four complete games, winning each, throwing a no-hitter against Tulsa among her three shutouts. She is 13-3 this season.
COCKETT ALL-AMERICA FINALIST: Hawaii's Nani Cockett is among 48 finalists for the Kodak Women's All-America basketball team. The UH senior was one of six standouts named from District 7. The 10-woman All-America team will be selected during the women's final four next weekend in Kansas City, Mo.
UH WOMEN SHARE SEVENTH: Katarina Forsberg shot a team-best 11-over-par 83 and the University of Hawaii Wahine had a share of seventh place at 54-over 342 going into today's final round of the 13-team Bud Light/Cal State Northridge Women's Golf Classic at Lompuc, Calif.
