Another WAC softball sweep for UH Wahine

Freshman Janelle Gonzales struck out a season-high 11 batters and junior Kelly Gentle tossed her second complete-game shutout in two nights as the 11th-ranked University of Hawaii softball team swept Tulsa in a WAC doubleheader, 10-0 and 10-2, last night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The games were shortened to five and six innings because of the eight-run rule. Hawaii improved to 23-3 overall, 9-1 in WAC play; Tulsa fell to 8-13 and 1-7.

Wahine left fielder Tia Morenz went 6-for-7 in the two games, scoring six runs.

The Wahine next host the six-team Bank of Hawaii Invitational, tomorrow through Sunday.

UH GOLFERS FINISH EIGHTH: The University of Hawaii men's golf team finished with a share of eighth place yesterday in the 54-hole USD/Ashworth Invitational tournament at Vista, Calif.

Van Wright, with a 5-over-par 77 yesterday and an 8-over total of 224, tied for 13th place in individual play to pace the Rainbows.

Robert Hamilton of Sacramento State was the medalist at 2-over 218 and UC Davis won the team title at 893. The Rainbows finished at 910.

VOLLEYBALL EXHIBITION: The University of Hawaii women's volleyball team will take on four-time defending NAIA champion Brigham Young-Hawaii in an exhibition match next Wednesday, March 18, at Klum Gym.

The event is a fund-raiser for the Wahine Booster Club. General admission tickets are $5, $3 for students, and available at the door the day of the match.

This will be the first meeting of the two teams since the Seasiders upset the Wahine in 1992, 3-1, a loss that kept Hawaii out of the NCAA Tournament for the only time in the program's history.

BYU-Hawaii is led by sophomore Arlete Silva, an all-American middle blocker and Volleyball magazine's NAIA Player of the Year. The Seasiders also feature all-American setter Juliana Lima.

BOXING AT BLAISDELL: "Tiger Ari" Olivetti defends his North American Boxing Organization lightweight championship against Golden "14kt" Johnson in the 12-round main event of a pro boxing card Saturday at the Blaisdell Arena.

In the 10-round co-feature, Hawaii state middleweight champ Eric Alexander takes on Xavier "Pee Wee" Cortez.

Sharing top billing with the men will be the first women's pro bout in Hawaii, a scheduled six-rounder pitting Sonya Emery against Colleen Smith.

The action begins at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $15 and up.

MOUNTAIN BIKE TOUR TO BEGIN: The fourth annual Outrigger Hotels Hawaiian Mountain Tour, featuring downhill and cross-country bicycle racing at Pupukea/Waimea Valley and Kualoa Ranch, begins tomorrow and runs through Sunday.
