C. Brewer & Co., the oldest company in Hawaii, has relocated its headquarters to Hilo from Honolulu.

In addition to adding to the Big Island's economy with a $3 million renovation, 12 permanent jobs have been created. Construction of the two-story, 14,000-square-foot Wainaku Executive Center employed more than 125 workers.

It is decorated with local koa, cedar and other island woods. Two Australian cedar trees removed to make way for power lines were made into a unique podium by Ed Winkler. The company plans a grand opening for the center on March 27 and 28.

The 10-acre complex, overlooking Hilo Bay, is a small part of Brewer's 60,000 Big Island acreage.

The company is involved in transportation, chemicals, energy, and property development with units that include: C. Brewer Properties Inc., Punaluu Bake Shop Inc., Kau Agribusiness Co., Brewer Environmental Industries, Brewer Environmental Laboratories, HT&T Co. and Hilo Coast Processing Co.

In addition to relocating headquarters, J.W.A. "Doc" Buyers, is getting involved in the community's issues.

At a recent meeting in Kau he was seen wearing a T-shirt with the slogan "No prison in Kau."

He also supports Hospice of Hilo, and is honorary chair for the Habitat for Humanity and the Hawaii Island Food Bank.
