Fueling up auto group's membership

Beverly W. Harbin wants to boost membership in the Hawaii Automotive Repair and Gasoline Dealers Association from 250 to 700 companies by the end of the year.

There are 1,200 Hawaii companies in the automotive repair, service station and towing industry. "It is more important for a trade association to establish clout through an active and empowered membership," Harbin said. "Group discounts are available to members for insurance, financial services, credit-card processing, supplies and equipment, and the products they sell. The larger the association, obviously, the better the discounts."

The association promotes occupational health and safety, recycling, environmental responsibility, and negotiates for better deals from manufacturers.

Harbin and her husband, Earl, are co-owners of Hon/Hawaii Auto Repairs in Kakaako and Aiea.
