AZTECS BEAT VULCANS: Damien Kolb and Brandon Rogers each had four of San Diego State's 18 hits as the Aztecs trimmed Hawaii-Hilo, 11-5, yesterday at Hall Field in Hilo.
San Diego State (7-9) opens a three-game series against Hawaii tonight at Rainbow Stadium.
UH-Hilo (4-19) plays doubleheaders against visiting Southern Colorado tomorrow and Sunday.
FRESHMAN HONORS FOR STOVALL: Erin Stovall, the Star-Bulletin's 1997 "Ms. Basketball," has been named to the Atlantic Coast Conference's All-Freshman Team.
The 5-foot-7 University of Virginia guard, who played last season for Iolani, is the Cavaliers' third leading scorer, averaging 9.1 points. She is second in steals with 54 and has scored in double figures in 14 games.
She stepped into a starting role for No. 18 Virginia (18-9) in January.
Stovall led the Interscholastic League of Honolulu in scoring average in 1997, her only season here.
HAWAII PACIFIC WINS BY FORFEIT: Hawaii Pacific University won the finale of a baseball series with Southern Colorado by forfeit last night when the visitors' coach refused to send his team onto the field at Hans L'Orange Park.
Coach Stan Sanchez had been ejected from the teams' previous game and the umpires had invoked an NCAA rule that also called for a one-game suspension.
But Sanchez showed up in uniform last night and insisted he would coach his team. When the umpires said he could not, he and his players left the field. The game then was forfeited.
TROPHY NIGHT FOR UH'S SHINNICK: University of Hawaii defensive back Chris Shinnick will be recognized tomorrow night at the Stan Sheriff Center for his selection to the GTE Academic All-America football team.
Keith Nagata, GTE Hawaiian Tel vice president-sales, will present a trophy and plaque to Shinnick during the UH-Pepperdine volleyball match.
Shinnick, a senior with a 3.87 grade point average, shared the interception lead for the 1997 Rainbows and was their second-leading tackler.
KICKOFF GRINDS: The Na Koa Football Club will sponsor a 1998 kickoff breakfast on Monday, March 23, at Murphy's Bar and Grill, with University of Hawaii head coach Fred vonAppen the featured speaker and UH recruiting coordinator Don Dillon to report on the Class of '98.
Doors open at 7 a.m. and breakfast will be served at 7:30.
Cost of the breakfast is $5 for Na Koa members and $7.50 for nonmembers. Attendance will be limited to the first 100 people.

Last year, Don Murphy, the restaurant's proprietor, presented Na Koa a check for more than $50,000 from the second annual Pigskin Pigout that was applied to a long-awaited football training table.
