Hawaii Wahine sweep
softball doubleheader

Alison Rapanot's double keyed a two-run rally in the sixth inning that gave the 11th-ranked University of Hawaii softball team a 6-4 victory over San Jose State and a sweep of last night's Western Athletic Conference doubleheader at the Rainbow Wahine Stadium.

Joyce Lum went 4-for-4 and Dana Degen hit a two-run homer in the Wahine's 10-3 first-game victory.

UH (18-2 overall, 4-0 WAC) moved up four places from No. 15 in the USA Today/NFCA rankings released yesterday. San Jose State is 3-7, 0-4.

HPU WINS: Kaina McCallum and Daric Stith combined for six runs, five hits and five RBIs, leading Hawaii Pacific University to a 9-3 baseball victory over Southern Colorado last night at Hans L'Orange Park.

The Sea Warriors improved to 7-8. Southern Colorado is 12-10.

AZTECS EDGE VULCANS: San Diego State defeated Hawaii-Hilo, 5-4, last night on the Big Island, weathering a two-run rally by the Vulcans in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Paul Yap went 3-for-5 to pace the Vulcans (4-18). The Aztecs are 6-9.

UH WAHINE SIGN SOCCER STAR: Veronica Flores, one of the top prep goal-scorers in Washington state soccer history, has signed a letter of intent to play for the University of Hawaii Wahine.

Flores led her Mount Vernon High School team to the Washington Class 3A championship last year. She scored 58 goals in her senior season for a career total of 144, just eight shy of the all-time state record.

RECORD STRIKES FOR KONA KIDS: Three Kailua-Kona youngsters -- Maryann Rogers, 15, Amanda Rogers, 10, and Peter Purdy, 7 -- have had their amberjack catches of Oct. 11, 1997 approved by the International Game Fish Association as world records in three junior angler divisions.

Maryann Rogers' 26-pounder in the girls' junior division, Amanda Rogers' 21-pounder in the girls' smallfry division and Purdy's 50-pound, 8-ounce whopper in the boys' smallfry division were certified as the heaviest amberjack ever caught in those age-groups.

The catches were made aboard the 28-foot "K-IX" skippered by Jeff Rogers with Rob Purdy as mate.
