No. 5-ranked Wahine
water polo team sinks
Michigan, 15-5

Marie-Luc Arpin scored eight goals as Hawaii hammered Michigan, 15-5, last night in a matchup of nationally ranked women's water polo teams at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

It was the ninth victory against one loss for the Wahine, who share the No. 5 spot with UC Santa Barbara. Michigan came in at No. 13 .

UH hosts UC Santa Barbara, Michigan and No. 1-ranked UCLA in the Rainbow Challenge tournament tomorrow and Friday.

HPU EIGHTH, BYUH 10TH IN POLL: Hawaii Pacific University held the eighth spot in the NAIA final regular-season basketball rankings while Brigham Young-Hawaii moved up two spots to No. 10.

The Sea Warriors and Seasiders meet in the Far West Hawaii Region playoff game on March 10 at Blaisdell Arena. The winner gets an automatic bid to the NAIA nationals later this month and the loser will have a shot at one of 10 at-large berths.

HIAC HONOR TO TRACY: Derrick Tracy, who led Chaminade to a pair of victories last week, was named Player of the Week today in the Hawaii Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Tracy, a 6-foot-6 junior forward from Dubuque, had 26 points against Seattle Pacific and 17 against Montana State-Billings, ranked No. 11 among NCAA Division II schools.

JENKINS, CLAVON ALL-PAC WEST: Forward Merriel Jenkins of Hawaii-Hilo and guard Darnell Clavon of Chaminade were among five players selected to the All-Pacific West Conference first team yesterday.

Titus Warmsley and James Washington of Montana State-Billings and Jeff McBroom of Seattle Pacific also were first-team picks. Warmsley took Player of the Year honors.

Chaminade's Stanley Martin was a second-team selection.

SEA WARRIORS DROP TWO: Thomas Schilling smacked two home runs and a single, good for six RBIs, as Southern Colorado beat Hawaii Pacific, 14-6, on the way to a sweep of its baseball doubleheader yesterday at Hans L'Orange Park.

Southern Colorado, which put the opener away with a nine-run first-inning onslaught, won the second game 12-6, improving its season record to 12-9. HPU fell to 6-8.

BYUH, CHAMINADE SPLIT: Stephanie Winters pitched a three-hitter as the Brigham Young-Hawaii softball team beat Chaminade, 3-1 in the second game of a doubleheader yesterday at Laie for their first on-the-field victory of the season.

The Silverswords won the first game, 7-2.

The Seasiders' only other win in 11 starts was via a forfeit.

WAHINE 11TH IN WAC SWIM: The University of Hawaii finished 11th out of 14 women's swimming and diving teams last weekend in the Western Athletic Conference Championships at Federal Way, Wash.

Diver J.P. Palmer paced UH with a sixth-place platform finish, a ninth off the one-meter board and a 10th in the 3-meter event.

The WAC men's championship meet will be held tomorrow through Saturday in San Antonio, Texas.

UH GOLFERS EIGHTH: The University of Hawaii's women's golf team wound up eighth in a field of 19 in the second annual Bay Area Classic, shooting a two-round aggregate of 654, 86 over par.

The top individual finisher for the Wahine was Desiree Ting, who shot 76-82-158 for 23rd place.
