JAL plans to create Honolulu subsidiary

Japan Airlines Inc. said today it will form a separate subsidiary to do its passenger service and baggage handling at Honolulu Airport.

The 80 to 90 JAL employees doing that work now will be laid off, but they won't necessarily be out of work because they can apply for jobs at the subsidiary, the company said.

The new structure will save money but have no effect on operations, a spokesman said. The announcement from the Honolulu office detailed the latest in a series of restructuring changes as JAL works to cut its U.S. costs.

About 200 airport workers in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Honolulu will be let go as the airline outsources their work.

JAL already has a unit, JAL Passenger Services America Inc., that does most of the airline's passenger reservations work at Los Angeles Airport.

Hawaii National Bank to extend its hours

Hawaii National Bank branches will have new, longer hours starting March 17.

The main branch in Chinatown and the Honolulu Airport, Kaimuki, Kalihi and Bishop Street branches will be open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

The Hawaii Kai, Makiki, Kailua, Mililani, Dillingham, Pearl City, Kahului and Kihei branches will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday. The Hilo branch hours will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday.

The move to extended hours follows similar moves by other local banks recently.
