Player of WeekCarter scored 18 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out six assists in the Rainbows' victory at San Jose State, then had 19 points, nine rebounds and another half-dozen assists in the upset of Fresno State.
RAINBOW SPIKERS RANKED FOURTH: Hawaii remained No. 4 nationally in this week's Volleyball magazine and USA Today/AVCA Coaches men's Division I rankings.
The Rainbows (13-2), trail UCLA (15-0), Pepperdine (10-1) and Brigham Young (6-2), Nos. 1-2-3, respectively in each poll.
MARATHON CLINIC RETURNS: The Honolulu Marathon Clinic will start its 25th year Sunday at 7:30 a.m. at the Kapiolani Park Bandstand.
There will be a short class and a run every Sunday through December, except for three-day holiday weekends.
The free clinics are conducted by founder Dr. Jack Scaff, a Honolulu cardiologist and author of "Your First Marathon." They are sponsored by the city Parks and Recreation Department.
BODYBUILDING CLASSIC: The 17th annual Hawaiian Classic Bodybuilding Championship will be held at 7 p.m., Sunday, at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki's Regency Ballroom.
Doors will open at 5 p.m., when sponsor booths will offer various health items for sale and free product demonstrations, samples, information and prize drawings.
The contest will include novice men, open women and masters men (ages 35-and-up) divisions. The entry fee of $30 includes a commemorative T-shirt. Late entries will be taken up to the day of the contest.
Guest posers will include Aaron "Batman" Baker, Ernie Taylor, Mike Matarazzo and Melissa Coates.
UH SAILORS IN STANFORD EVENT: The University of Hawaii coed sailing team will compete in the Stanford Team Race Saturday and Sunday at the Stanford Sailing Center in Redwood City, Calif.
Sailing for UH, which moved up from 18th to 12th place in the latest Sailing World magazine college poll, will be Brent Harrill, Jeff Nelson, Laura Rehg, June Tomizawa, Garrett Woodworth and Len Yonemura.
Defending national team racing champion Stanford heads the strong field.
METCALF WINS SILVER CUP RACE: Honda rider Kevin Metcalf edged Karen Kawasaki's Chevy II for the top spot in the first race of the NAPA Silver Cup drag-racing series last Saturday at Hawaii Raceway Park.
The three top point-scorers in the series will win more than $1,000 in NAPA awards, plus a championship jacket and Silver Cup trophy.
This Saturday's feature is the opening race of the 10-event Snap-On Gold Cup series for dragsters, roadsters and pro stock-type cars.
WAHINE SIXTH IN GOLF MEET: Desiree Ting shot a 5-over-par 76 for a share of sixth place in individual competition and her University of Hawaii team also was sixth after yesterday's opening round of the second annual Bay Area Classic in Vallejo, Calif.
The UH team of Ting, Katarina Forsberg (79), Linda Appelblad (84), Melissa Shintani (84) and Angie Park (85) had an aggregate score of 323, 18 strokes behind pace-setter Pepperdine.
Individually, Jenny Glasgow of Pepperdine had a 2-under 69 for a four-stroke advantage over California's Nicole Bolter.
