Wayne Keonaanamanu Davis, 58, of Nanakuli, known for his Hawaiian genealogy research, died Feb. 24 in St. Francis Hospital West.

He was a member of the Royal Order of Kamehameha I, holding positions of Alii, 6th Degree,mr6 Wayne Davis Knights Companion, and the office of Kahu Moo Kuauhau Nui of the Order.

Among other affiliations, he also belonged to the King Kamehameha Hawaiian Civic Club, Hawaiian Historical Society, Polynesian Voyaging Society, New England Historical Genealogical Society and Portuguese Genealogical Society of Hawaii. He was a Smithsonian Institute Associate.

Davis believed people must draw ideals and cultural values from the ways of their ancestors. He researched and prepared several educational booklets in genealogy and history for Kamehameha Schools, including one not yet published on the genealogies and history of the chiefs of each of the Hawaiian Islands.

Born in Honolulu, he graduated from Kamehameha School for Boys in 1957. He had retired from working at Hawaiian Electric Co.’s Kahe power plant, and also had worked as a Hawaiian Home Lands application officer. He belonged to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 1260.

His wife, Roxanna Laheamanu Ako Davis, called him a gentle bear who was always there with a helping hand.

“He never asked for anything in return,” she said. “Wayne was just such a very humble person.”

Davis once gave his last $25 to a man just out of prison who needed a birth certificate and state identification card to get a job, she said. A week later the man robbed a bank and was apprehended. Although he had hoped the man would go straight, he never tried to get the money back, his wife said.

“He gave with aloha, he wasn’t angry,” she recalled.

He also is survived by son Wayne Kawika Davis; daughter Winona Naleialoha Davis Ragragola; brother Glenn Puuwai Davis; father Joseph Kalikimaka Davis; hanai daughters Kamala, Mahealani and Kehaunani Fontanilla; and granddaughter Genesis Keolamakana Davis.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mililani Memorial Park Mortuary. Call after 10 a.m. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. at Mililani Memorial Park. A wake will be at 6 p.m. Monday at Kamehameha Schools Bishop Memorial Chapel. Call after 4 p.m. Aloha attire.
