Building a
better mailbox

Searching for that better mailbox -- one that can resist damp weather and vandals?

Step2, an Ohio-based company, has come up with something stronger and far more aesthetic-looking than the conventional galvanized mailbox.

The Mailmaster Standard 5401 is an all-in-one mailbox and post with convenient front- and rear-door access.

Constructed of rugged, one-piece molded plastic, it has a roomy interior for letters, magazines, catalogs, and more.

The 5401, which attaches easily to an existing or new 4-by-4 wood post (not included), is 23 inches long by 12 inches wide, 51 inches high and weighs about 17 pounds. Suggested retail price is $40.

The Mailmaster Plus 5402 is similar, except that below the main mail compartment is a newspaper puka to keep newspapers clean and dry. Suggested price is $50.

The top-of-the-line Mailmaster Deluxe 5403 has an extra-large interior to hold plenty of mail and is so wide it lets magazines and catalogs lay flat! It also comes with two newspaper compartments. The 5403 weighs 25.5 pounds and sells for about $60.

Mailmaster mailboxes come fully assembled with mounting hardware and are available in gray, black and spruce. You can find them at Sears.
