The Cougars dominate against
By Pat Bigold
Seabury Hall, but need penalty kicks
to win in girls' state soccer
Star-BulletinSitting around for more than three weeks following the league playoffs can create a lot of cobwebs. That was the case for Kaiser and seven other unseeded teams yesterday in the opening round of the 17th Hawaii High School Athletic Association Girls' Soccer Tournament.
For the Cougars (10-1-1), the result was 100 minutes of play without a goal, despite a 22-3 advantage in shots against Seabury Hall (12-3-0).
Kaiser finally won, 1-0, on penalty kicks after playing through two 10-minute overtimes, collecting 16 fouls and four yellow cards.

"We were flat tonight," Kaiser coach Carl Izumi said. "Hopefully we'll get better."But the long layoff was the price Oahu teams were willing to pay to keep the tournament on the island.
The tournament was originally scheduled at Aloha Stadium last week, but the HHSAA sold the rights to the facility to Tom Moffatt so he could stage last weekend's Mariah Carey concert. The tournament was to be relocated to War Memorial Stadium on Maui Feb. 18-21.
But parents from Kaiser and other soccer programs on Oahu complained that they weren't given enough notice of the change and pressured the HHSAA to find a later date at Aloha Stadium.
"It's good that it's here because we have to pay for graduation," winning goalkeeper Meghan Hamilton said. "If we had to pay for hotels, we wouldn't have had anymore money left."
Izumi said he, too, is happy to be home this week.
"I'm glad they brought it back," he said.
Hamilton, who had to make only three saves, wondered how she would respond in the do-or-die penalty-kick phase.
"I couldn't (stop) any of the shots in practice, so I guess it just came down to I could do it because the Adrenaline was rushing," said Hamilton, who stopped Rene Judd, Leah Andrews and Randi Kikuchi.
Kaiser won on successful penalty kicks by Erin Sayegusa, Janelle Fujie, Lianne Dela Cruz and Kerra Wong.
