


The nationally 15th-ranked University of Hawaii softball team opened its Western Athletic Conference season yesterday with a 14-2, 8-1 doubleheader sweep of host San Diego State. Lum keys UH softball sweep
Joyce Lum tied a school record by going 5-for-5 in the second game, with two RBIs. She also drove in two runs in the first game with a double.
UH pitchers Kelly Gentle and Janelle Gonzales each went the seven-inning distance, Gentle spacing eight hits and Gonzales allowing four as the Wahine improved their overall record to 16-2.
Leading the first-game onslaught of 15 UH hits were Tyree Woodruff, Melissa McGie and Dana Degen with three each. Degen had a home run, a double and three RBIs; Woodruff a triple and four RBIs. Lum had four singles and a double among the 14 UH hits in the nightcap.
UH WATER POLO TEAM TIED FOR NO. 5: In their first season of varsity play, the University of Hawaii Wahine have earned a share of fifth place in the first edition of the National Collegiate Women's Water Polo poll.
The Wahine, 8-1 overall and 1-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, are tied for the No. 5 spot with UC Santa Barbara, a team they beat on the road.
Their only loss was to defending national champion UCLA, which is No. 1 in the poll. Cal Berkeley, Stanford and San Diego State are 2-3-4.
UH WOMEN IN BAY AREA GOLF FIELD: Melissa Shintani, Linda Appelblad, Angie Park and Katarina Forsberg, will play for the University of Hawaii women's golf team in the second annual Bay Area Classic Monday and Tuesday in Vallejo, Calif.
It will be the first event for new UH coach Marga Stubblefield, a former UH golfer who went on to play nine years on the LPGA Tour.
Co-hosts Cal Berkeley and USF, defending champion Northern Arizona and 16 other teams will participate.
