Book signing cheers Quinn

'I really am overjoyed to have so many friends show up and buy a copy of that book," said former Gov. Bill Quinn at the old Archives building Wednesday. "That book" is "No Ordinary Man," by Mary Richards, on Quinn's role in Hawaii's history. Quinn was Hawaii's last appointed territorial governor and first elected state chief executive. "This is going to bring up lots of memories," Richards said. Quinn's wife, Nancy, and Gregory, the youngest of their seven children, attended the book signing. "Dad was just 37 when he was first sworn in as governor," said Gregory, 38. The other Quinn children live on the mainland. Former Sen. Hiram Fong, 91, walked in with wife, Ellyn. "We're lucky," Fong said, to comments on how well they both looked. Irmgard Aluli and Puamana were on hand to enhance the affair with Hawaiian music. Perry and Sutherland Events catered ...

The paper's business section, under a "Hawaii Adrift" headline, led off with stories about Hawaii trying to diversify its economy through high technology and about how Hawaii is shaping up as a good deal for tourists. Gov. Ben Cayetano, in the Page 1 story, says the house he built in 1990 for $700,000 is now worth 25 percent less. Richard Kelley, Gary Hahn, Joseph Toy, Mike Sasaki, Leroy Laney, Mayor Jeremy Harris, Jack Meyers, Russell Okata, Sen. Sam Slom and Maui Mayor Linda Lingle are mentioned in the story ...

MORE THAN $500,000 was raised at the annual Heart Ball for the Heart Association last Saturday at the Sheraton Waikiki. Co-chair Ginny Lloyd said that insures Honolulu's No. 2 ranking, next to Houston, for money raised. Linda New was chairperson. The theme was Ports of Call and Liberty House and Rit Pierce had the ballroom decked out for a lavish "captain's dinner."
