Whale count needs help

The 1998 Oahu Humpback Whale Count needs volunteer whale watchers around the island. From 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday, participants will help count the humpback whales and gather information on whale migration, population and health, important data in the effort to protect and nurture the endangered ocean mammal. Last year 150 volunteers watched whales at more than 20 coastal sites on Oahu.

The count is sponsored by The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary Program, Hawaii Pacific University and Youth for Environmental Service. To volunteer, call 957-0423.
