Parker, UH ‘Green’
lead Burns golf

The Hawaii "Green" team, with individual front-runner Bret Parker, took a three-stroke lead over UNLV into today's final round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate Golf Tournament at the Kaneohe Klipper course.

Parker, a freshman, fired a 9-under-par 63 yesterday, tying a tournament record previously shared by Mike Springer of Arizona and Bill Mayfair of Arizona State, for a 36-hole total of 135.

He was one stroke ahead of New Mexico's Doug La Belle, who shot 70, and two up on UH "Green" teammate Isaac Sanchez, who shot 69.

UH "Green" had a two-round aggregate of 559 -- 17 under par. UNLV was at 562, third-place Oklahoma State 566 and No. 4 Arizona 568. UH-Hilo was 19th (597) and UH "White" last (608) in the 22-team field.

KGU'S FRANCIS TO THE RESCUE: Russ Francis, who raised more than $2,000 on his KGU radio talk show to replace equipment stolen from the Hawaii-Hilo women's softball team last week, will present a check to the Vulcans at a special 8 a.m. breakfast tomorrow at Sam Choy's Breakfast, Lunch and Crab restaurant.

The UH-Hilo team is on a six-game Oahu road trip.

WATER POLO WIN FOR WAHINE: Marie-Luc Arpin and Vanessa Wasik each scored three goals as the first-year University of Hawaii women's water polo team defeated nationally ninth-ranked UC San Diego, 14-6, last night at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

Amy Morrow, Michele Wong and Mandy Crawford had two goals apiece for the Wahine, who have won five straight matches for a 7-1 season record.

UH and UC San Diego play again tomorrow at 6:30 p.m.

HPU SPLITS ON DIAMOND: Home runs by Aaron Lum, Daric Stith and Lee Anzai helped Hawaii Pacific University beat Point Loma Nazarene, 6-4, for a split of their baseball doubleheader yesterday at La Jolla, Calif.

Brian Spry's tie-breaking two-run homer in the fifth inning carried the Crusaders to a 7-4 first-game victory. Stith had a three-run homer for the Sea Warriors (6-5), who wind up a seven-game California trip today at Costa Mesa with a single game against Southern California College.

HURRICANES TO PLAY OUTLAWS: The Honolulu Hurricanes will tune up for their debut in the Professional Indoor Football League by taking on the Las Vegas Outlaws in a Feb. 28 exhibition game at Blaisdell Arena.

Tickets are $8 for the 7 p.m. game.

Las Vegas, slated to be a 1999 PIFL expansion team, is coached by league commissioner Dick Suess and stocked with many former UNLV players.

The Hurricanes play their season opener against the Colorado Wildcats in Denver on April 11.

HPU TOPPLES BYUH: Singles victories by 10th-ranked NAIA player Eric Sandblom, Mathias Lundmark, Johan Sandblom, Marcus Lindstrup and Mikio Watanabe led Hawaii Pacific to a 6-3 tennis win over Brig-ham Young-Hawaii yesterday at Laie.

VULCANS IN SWING ON ROAD: The University of Hawaii at Hilo men's tennis team began play today in the Cal Poly Pomona Tournament after a pair of convincing road victories.

The Vulcans beat Cal State Los Angeles, 8-1, Tuesday and swamped Sonoma State University, 9-0, yesterday.
