McManus says aloha
IRELAND'S Seamus McManus, wearing a green derby, ruffled shirt, bow tie and knickers, looked as Irish as he could be at his and wife Simone's aloha party at where else but Murphy's Saturday night. McNamus is departing as Kahala Mandarin G.M. to run Claridge's in London. A highlight of the evening was when Seamus danced an Irish jig with Nery Heenan to the music of bagpiper Larry Coleman and hot fiddler Lisa Leung. Lisa and guitarist Dr. Larry Levin played Irish music most of the night. Speakers, including Waialae head golf pro Greg Nichols, joked about teammates McManus and Ken Sandefur failing to bet on themselves in the Francis Brown Waialae tourney, which the pair won. Had they placed a $10 bet on themselves, they would have won more than $1,500. Sandefur organized the farewell party. Don Murphy's Irish stew was delicious ...DEAN HYRY is acting Mandarin G.M. until McManus' replacement is named. Mandarin chef Oliver Altherr has moved up to food and beverage chief. But Oliver will still be a key part of the Hoku's culinary scene ... Golf stars Fred Couples, Tom Watson and Paul Azinger were spotted in the Kahala Mandarin's Plumeria Cafe this week ...

Smythe gets his ace
TIM SMYTHE scored his first hole-in-one using a 5-wood on Ala Wai's tough 180-yard 11th hole. Smythe, an 11-handicapper, shot 76. He was teamed with Jimmy Borges and Rosie Jaber against Rosie's husband, Charley, Bob Swan and Lewellyn Luke. Tim's game has come a long way since we learned golf in UH phys ed class from 'Bow basketball coach Al Saake in 1950-51. We would grab old wooden-shaft clubs and play Ala Wai barefoot, after paying green fees of a couple bucks and walking right on ...
