RUNNING is what politicians seem to do best, while governing or legislating takes a back seat. It's common knowledge that Gov. Ben Cayetano is going to run for reelection, and Maui Mayor Linda Lingle has been turning up all over Oahu trying to drum up support on this island for her candidacy for governor. It's still up in the air if Honolulu Mayor Jeremy Harris joins in the run for the governor's office and you just know Frank Fasi will run any time he gets a chance. Right now, Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono is preparing for the race of her life. Having turned 50 last November, Hirono has set herself a goal. She's entered the Great Aloha Run next week, and while she regularly runs the 5.5 miles in 55 minutes, in honor of her age she's determined to cut her time down to 50 minutes. Personally, I find her race more interesting than most ... Mazie matching

TRIVIA question: "When the young phenom who went on to be known as the great Wayne Gretzy joined the Edmonton Oilers, whose place on the roster did he take?" The answer may surprise you, because the chap in question lives in Hawaii. He's Ted McAneeley and he works at the Hawaii Prince Hotel. Despite his polite demeanor and American good looks today, McAneeley is a Canadian native who used to mix it up pretty good as a defenseman for the Oilers in the '70s. Now he's filling a second function: McAneeley is the guy the National Hockey League turned to when it needed a special advisor for the inaugural appearance of its players in the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. Dialog and dialogue
THOSE people who pride themselves in not watching television because it's not relevant might consider finding a set for a day, at least. From 6:30 to 8 p.m. tomorrow, there'll be something less than valentines being tossed around when Channel 55 airs "The Bishop Estate Controversy" with "Broken Trust" author Randall Roth and Estate attorney Bill McCorriston among those engaging in public dialogue. And if you switch over to KHET at 8 p.m., you can phone in questions to Mayor Harris on "Dialog" as he discusses "The City's Economic Dilemma." With apologies to Michael Buffer, "Let's get ready to rummmmmmble." ...
