Dip into ancient fish ponds

Joseph Farber, author of "Ancient Hawaiian Fishponds," keynotes this weekend's maritime-archaeology symposium at Hawai'i Maritime Center at Pier 7.

Farber speaks on "Ancient Hawaiian Fishponds: History and Archaeology" at 9:20 a.m. tomorrow, followed by a 2:10 p.m. talk on "The Contemporary Fishpond Restoration Movement in Hawai'i: Problems and Potential."

Cost of the forum tomorrow and Sunday is $20 per day, payable at the door. Call the sponsoring University of Hawaii Marine Option Program, 956-8433.

Farber's 100-page "Ancient Hawaiian Fishponds" (Neptune House, September 1997, $16) covers the history and modern efforts to revive Molokai fish ponds.

Sold at most bookstores, the book will be available at the conference.
