CHAMINADE'S MARTIN HIAC STANDOUT: Chaminade forward Stanley Martin was named Player of the Week by the Hawaii Intercollegiate Athletic Conference yesterday.
The 6-foot-5 sophomore had a combined 46 points and 14 rebounds as the Silverswords went 1-1 last week, with a win over Hawaii-Hilo and a loss to Hawaii Pacific. Martin shot 15 for 33 from the floor and was 12 for 12 from the free throw line, leading Chaminade in scoring in both games.
HPU SEVENTH, BYUH NINTH: Hawaii Pacific remained No. 7 while Brigham Young-Hawaii jumped to No. 9 in the latest NAIA men's basketball ratings.
The Sea Warriors (15-3) and the Seasiders (14-4) both head to the mainland this week for games against future Pacific West Conference foes. HPU and BYUH will move from the NAIA to NCAA Division II next season, joining Hawaii-Hilo and Chaminade in the Pac West.
In national statistics, HPU junior guard Shannon Lee is 10th in assists (6.9) and the Sea Warriors are tied for 12th in scoring margin (14.72).
As a team, BYU-Hawaii is fourth in scoring (94.5), eighth in field goal percentage (.515), ninth in 3-point percentage (.414) and 11th in scoring margin (14.94).
JENKINS LEADS PAC WEST: Although Hawaii-Hilo is fifth in the Pacific West Conference men's basketball standings, the Vulcans have two of the league's top players.
Junior forward Merriel Jenkins is the top-rated player and junior guard Maceo Thomas is third, based on various statistical categories.
Jenkins has 53 points, leading the Pac West in rebounds while No. 2 in scoring, blocked shots, field goal percentage and free throw percentage. Thomas, with 26 points, is the assist leader and is second in steals and fourth in blocks.
WAHINE 31ST: The University of Hawaii women's softball team was ranked No. 31 in the USA Today Coaches preseason poll released yesterday.
The Wahine (4-0) received 40 votes. Arizona is the preseason favorite followed by Western Athletic Conference member Fresno State.
UH hosts the Paradise Classic this week, opening the six-team tournament against Simon Frasier tomorrow at 6 p.m. Also competing are Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Nebraska, UC Santa Barbara and Oregon State.
KOIKE BODYBOARD CHAMP: Aoi Koike of Japan stunned judges and spectators with killer barrel rides and power maneuvers to win the ninth annual World Championship of Women's Bodyboarding Monday in 8- to 10-foot Banzai Pipeline surf.
Koike held off a gallant charge by Hawaii's Robin Cordoza, who took second place. Tanira Guiomeires of Brazil was third.
The second DK Expression Session also finished up at Pipeline, with Kainoa McGee of Hawaii successfully defending his title.
Jack Lindholm, who pioneered bodyboarding at Pipeline, was second and Manny Vargus of California third.
