Seeking a higher profile for Lanai

Patrick J. Birmingham takes over day-to-day operations at the Lanai Company, replacing Tom Hoadley who is retiring.

"Our goal is to make this island better known," Birmingham said.

The island's residential sales are going well, he said. Since the first of the year, 10 oceanfront townhomes near the Manele Bay Hotel have sold for prices from $1.3 to $2 million.

He spent 38 years with ITT Sheraton Corp. before retiring in 1995 and becoming a consultant to Sheraton in Ireland and Italy. He also attended the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco.

Birmingham worked for eight years on Oahu as senior vice president and president of Sheraton's Hawaii-Japan division. He was responsible for 17 hotels in Japan, California and Hawaii.

The Lanai Company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Castle & Cooke Inc.
