
Kazuo Ishii, 89, was key figure

behind island bank chainKazuo Ishii opened the first Central Pacific Bank branch in downtown Honolulu in 1954. The bank, established by World War II veterans to help struggling community groups, had capital of $350,000.
When Ishii retired as president 24 years later, the bank had nearly $16 million in capital and $353 million in assets.
Ishii, 89, of Honolulu died Tuesday in Straub Hospital.
In 1985, he received Japans Imperial Award, The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, which recognizes excellence in community relations.
Ishii was active in the Hawaii Bankers Association, the Chamber of Commerce of Honolulu, Aloha United Way, the Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship Foundation, the Nippon Club, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce, the United Japanese Society, the Japan-America Society, and the Hawaii Economic Study Club.
Born in Hiroshima, Japan, he is survived by son Takeshi; daughters Hiroko Nishida and Kuniko Misawa; brother Akida; sister Takiko Shimomae; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
