Ivy Nagayama, chef Oliver Altherr and their staff offered delicious food from their Hale 'Aina Restaurant of the Year. Wine was from Richard Field. Rachel Gonzalez's vocals, with pianist Les Peetz, drummer Harold Chang and bass-ist Miles Jackson, kept things upbeat ... Hoku's has an isle Shellfish Fest Thursday through Feb. 12 ... Brandt zeroes in on Yim
WHEN Gladys Brandt saw retired Judge Patrick Yim walk into the Maple Garden banquet room, the Broken Trust co-author said with a smile, "I'm going to give him a bad time," for erasing his Bishop Estate files. When I told Gladys I would like to use her quote, she said, "Sure, but say I said it with a smile." Yim said, "It's the smile that gets you," and broke into a smile. A stolen statue that was fronting the Thai restaurant turned up the day before the benefit and was in place for the opening. Sananikone has a flower farm and the well-designed, spacious eatery was full of blossoms. Keo donated the tasty food and beverage for the affair. Judging from the response, Keo has another winner. SINGER Joe Lindsey Makahilahila's heart gave out on Dec. 16, the day after he was shown his first CD, "Makahilahila." Joe's friends and fans will not be disappointed in the CD, on sale at Harry's Music. Makahilahila, 41, was known for falsetto singing, showcased on "E Mama E." Coming from Waimea ranch country, he was also strong on C&W tunes. A duet of "You Were Always on My Mind," with Melveen Leed is a hit. A duet of "Let It Be Me" with Loyal Garner is packed with emotion. Suzy Koga and her mom, Ruth, deserve praise for producing the album for their dear friend ...BILLIE BEAMER'S death last Saturday was a shock.
