Buffett's firm buys huge amount of silver
OMAHA, Neb. -- Speculation has been swirling over who has been bidding up the price of silver to the highest levels in nearly a decade. Now, one mystery buyer has emerged: investor Warren Buffett. The nearly 130 million ounces of silver bought since July by Buffett's Omaha-based investment company, Berkshire Hathaway Inc., is more than the total kept in warehouses by the New York Mercantile Exchange. It is worth about $850 million at today's prices. But in the surprise announcement made after markets closed yesterday, the company sought to assuage any concerns that Buffett might stray from his steadfast buy-and-hold policy. The company said that the silver position accounts for less than 2 percent of its portfolio.
