Free tax help available
on Windward side, too

The American Association of Retired Persons is offering free help in preparing federal and state income taxes.

The AARP Tax-Aid Program, which has merged with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, has trained volunteers to assist people of all ages, low- to moderate-income levels, especially the elderly, non-English speaking or disabled. Bring copies of last year's income tax forms, plus current income tax information. Call 523-4545 or ASK-2000 for nearest location, including the neighbor islands.

Windward Oahu sites are listed today. Honolulu and Leeward sites were listed yesterday.

Someone gave me a halogen lamp. I recall reading an article about calling an 800 number to get some safety information, but can't find that article. Can you give me the number?

Call the Consumer Products Safety Commission at 1-800-638-2772. A recording gives information about other products before discussing halogen lamps, but you can skip ahead by pressing 131#, then 131 again.

For lamps made before February 1997, it basically means getting wire guards, which the industry is offering for free through selected retailers (the recording tells you who) or by calling 1-800-985-2220.

Since American Savings Bank bought out Bank of America, I have not received any statements for my checking or savings account. When will they start sending it out?

Call the Customer Service Center at 627-6900 (neighbor islanders, call 1-800-272-2566).

You should have received a statement by now, said spokeswoman Jean Kondo.

Auwe

To the family who, on Dec. 26, brought a 2-year-old to the 4 p.m. showing of the "Titanic" at Restaurant Row. It's difficult for a toddler to be quiet for 3 to 4 hours. It was rude and unfair to others. -- M.

Mahalo

To Mr. Jim Wong of the U.S. Postal Service, a management system specialist, who so graciously helped a disabled senior at busy Ala Moana Center late one night.

Because of a worsening hearing impairment, I needed help in contacting Triple-A and providing the necessary information.

I extend my apology to his daughter, who so patiently waited until help arrived. May you and loved ones have a happy new year. -- S.I.
