


Parents say hospital failed in diagnosis
WAILUKU -- The parents of a woman who committed suicide have filed a lawsuit alleging Maui Memorial Hospital failed to properly diagnose her.Stephen and Lorraine Wilmoth charge that their daughter, Rainbow J. Wilmoth, should have been admitted to the hospital's psychiatric unit after expressing suicidal thoughts on July 22.
She jumped off a cliff in Huelo near her home shortly after her discharge on July 23, according to the lawsuit filed Friday in Maui Circuit Court.
The lawsuit also names as defendants Dr. Jonathan Weisul and registered nurse Tamara Freeman, both of whom allegedly treated Wilmoth, and Charles T. Mitchell M.D. Inc., the corporation providing emergency medical services.
Principal sues HSTA over published charge
WAILUKU -- The principal of Lanai High and Elementary School has filed a lawsuit claiming the Hawaii State Teachers Association unjustly attacked her professionalism.Norma Barroga alleges that on Aug. 14 at the Kona Surf Hotel, association Deputy Executive Director Joan L. Husted and member Patricia Hera placed on their group's agenda a discussion about Barroga's conduct.
The association published a charge that Barroga was not treating teachers fairly at the school, according to the lawsuit filed Tuesday.
The lawsuit charges the association with failing to follow proper grievance procedures and not taking into account statements by teachers defending Barroga.
Bomb threat forces jetliner to return
LOS ANGELES -- A Hawaiian Airlines jet en route to Honolulu with 121 people aboard returned to Los Angeles late yesterday after police received a bomb threat. A search found nothing.The call was received by Los Angeles police shortly after 8 p.m., police spokesman Don Cox said. He declined to give details.
Flight 9 with 108 passengers and 13 crew members was already an hour into the flight when it turned around, said Hawaiian Airlines spokesman Keoni Wagner. The bomb squad searched the plane and luggage but found no bombs.
Passengers were put up at a hotel at the expense of the airline and booked on a flight this morning, Wagner said.

A bank robber, nicknamed the "ZZ Top bandit" due to a resemblance to the bearded members of a rock music group, struck again yesterday for the third time in seven days.The man entered Bank of Honolulu's Pearlridge branch at 98-150 Kaonohi St. yesterday at 1:15 p.m., presented a teller with a demand note stating he was armed, and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.
The suspect is described as a Caucasian in his late 30s, about 5-feet-10 and 140 pounds, with a gray mustache and full beard.
He also is suspected in the Jan. 21 robbery of Bank of Hawaii's Chinatown branch and Friday's attempted robbery of International Savings and Loan in Waipahu.

Police are searching for an armed man who allegedly robbed two women in the parking lot of a Waimalu video store last night. The suspect brandished a handgun and demanded money from the two victims as they parked their car at the video store on Kamehameha Highway, police said.
Police this morning arrested an escaped inmate for allegedly soliciting an undercover officer. The woman was arrested on Matlock Avenue for prostitution at 1:30 a.m., police said. Detectives then identified her as an escapee from the Women's Community Correctional Center in Kailua.
Police yesterday arrested a woman for reportedly abusing her boyfriend and threatening him with a knife. Police said the Iliwai Drive woman, 20, was booked for first-degree terroristic threatening and abuse of a household member.
A 41-year-old homeless man was arrested for the apparent arson of a Koohala Street home. The resident told police she saw a man fleeing from her home during a small fire near her garage on Sunday. He was located and arrested last night.
KAILUA-KONA -- Fire Department rescue personnel planned to begin a helicopter search at daybreak today for a 78-year-old hiker missing on Hualalai mountain. Elmer Schwantes of Kailua-Kona went hiking at 9 a.m. yesterday and was reported missing by his brother at 6:52 p.m.
