Sitar master performs at Orvis

Ustad Shuujaat Husain Khan, hailed by critics as a sitar virtuoso, performs at 8 p.m. tomorrow at Orvis Auditorium at the University of Hawaii-Manoa.

Tickets to the concert, with Abhiman Kaushal on tabla, are $30 reserved, $20 general and $15 for students. They are available at UH Campus Center, Down to Earth, Harry's Music, Easy Music Center, Mango's in Kailua and Zaffron restaurant.

Hailing from a musical family in India, Khan was 3 when he started practicing on a specially made sitar. He was performing classical Indian music by the time he was 6.

The Times of India has written of Khan: "The sitar is his instrument of speech, of feeling, of expression and creation." His fingers, the Times said, "make the strings coo like a dove."

Khan has released 28 albums internationally and performs regularly at music festivals in India. Since 1974, he has toured worldwide, performing at New York's Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, and London's Royal Albert Hall. He also performed a sold-out show at the Honolulu Academy of Arts Theatre last May. For information, call 262-6077.
