UH softballers picked fourth

The University of Hawaii softball team was picked to finish fourth in the Western Athletic Conference in a preseason poll by the league coaches.

Perennial powerhouse Fresno State is favored to win the WAC title, receiving eight first-place votes. Defending champion Colorado State had the remaining first-place vote and was second in the poll, with Utah third.

Hawaii opens its season Monday with a scrimmage against Chaminade at 5 p.m. at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

BYUH RAISES BANNERS: The Brigham Young-Hawaii women's tennis and volleyball teams, which won national titles in 1997, were honored yesterday during an assembly at Cannon Activities Center.

The ceremony included raising the NAIA championship banners, the 11th and 12th for the Laie school.

The Seasiders' volleyball team won its eighth title, and fourth in a row, last December. The undefeated tennis team placed first for the first time last May as Karin Ptaszek won the singles crown and Anneli Ornstedt and Teresa Stromberg teamed for the doubles title.
