Michael Philip Jagger
Born: July 26, 1943, in Dartford, Kent, England The celebrated lead singer of the Rolling Stones and one of the most potent sex symbols of the 20th century, Jagger has become less a pop star than a media icon. Initially a shy, middle-class student at the London School of Economics, his love of blues, distinctive vocal style and charismatic stage persona marked him as an original. The antithesis of the pretty-boy lead vocalists of the era, Jagger's surly demeanor, rubber lips and scarecrow body were greeted with bemusement by pop magazines of the time. Jagger transformed the deficiencies into commodities. His self-reconstruction even extended as far as completely altering his accent. In mid-'60s television interviews Jagger came across as an urbane, well-spoken university student, but as the decade progressed, pseudo-cockney inflections infiltrated his speech, ultimately creating the multimouthed media monster of the present: equally at home talking to the gutter press and the highbrow monthlies.
Jagger resisted the temptation to branch out from the Stones into too many uncharted areas. A desultory appearance in the film "Ned Kelly" revealed that his powers of mimicry did not extend as far as a convincing Australian/Irish accent. By contrast, the extraordinary "Performance" captured the combined innocence and malevolence of Jagger's persona to striking effect in the guise of a gangster and decadent rock star. The experiment was not repeated. Jagger was even less concerned about expressing himself in a literary form, unlike others of his generation. Jagger once admitted that he could not even remember sufficient details of his life to pen a ghosted biography.
Jagger once stated that he would retire before middle age for fear that the Rolling Stones might become an anachronistic parody of themselves.
These days such fears appear to have been banished.
Ron Wood
Born: June 1, 1947, in Hillingdon, Middlesex, England Ron Wood formed the Birds with other students at his Middlesex art school.Next, Wood joined Creation, then entered Jeff Beck's employ as second guitarist and then bass player. Arguments with Beck led to Wood's dismissal in 1969.
He and Beck's vocalist, Rod Stewart, formed the Faces, which became a major international act in the early '70s. Keith Richards played on Wood's 1975 "Now Look."
Richards invited him to be a temporary member of the Rolling Stones while the group searched for a replacement for guitarist Mick Taylor. Wood joined in December 1975 as a full-time member while continuing to release solo records.
He also has performed in televised spectaculars with old idols like Fats Domino, Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis.
Charles Robert Watts
Born: June 2, 1941, in Islington, England The first Stones lineup was Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Mick Taylor, Ian Stewart, drummer Tony Chapman and Brian Jones.Charlie Watts replaced Taylor in January 1963. In the early days, Watts was the drummer of the Blues Incorporated.
He's considered by many to be the favorite Stone. "It's Charlie Watts' band. Without him, we wouldn't exist," Keith Richards has said.
Keith Richards
Born: Dec. 18, 1943, in Dartford, Kent, England As founding member and principal guitarist of the Rolling Stones, Richards occupies a unique place in rock history. His incisive rhythm work, initially modeled on Chuck Berry, has provided the template for many of his group's finest moments. He became the partner of Mick Jagger when a need for original material arose. Their work flourished upon completing "The Last Time" in 1965. In a series of excellent singles, including "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," "Get Off of My Cloud" (both 1965) and "Paint It Black" (1966), Richards' riffs provided the cornerstone to a sound that relied on atmosphere, rather than melody, for effect.
Richards' drug dependency throughout the '70s blighted his private life, but musically, the highlights continued. He completed several solo studio sessions during 1976 and 1977, but the sole product was the belated Christmas single, "Run Rudolph Run" (1979). That same year he was convicted of heroin charges by a Toronto court. His penance was a charity concert for which he formed the New Barbarians with Ron Wood, Stanley Clarke, Ian McLagan and saxophonist Bobby Keys.
He appeared at Live Aid in 1985 as part of a ramshackle trio with Bob Dylan and Ron Wood. A feud with Mick Jagger reached its peak in 1986, threatening the future of the group. Richards subsequently worked with Chuck Berry and Aretha Franklin before beginning his first official solo album.
Richards and Jagger were later reconciled and worked on "Steel Wheels" and the huge U.S. and European tour that followed.
