Star-Bulletin staff

Impressive wins over Central Washington and Lewis-Clark State helped Hawaii Pacific jump three spots to No. 5 in the NAIA Division I men's basketball poll today.

The Sea Warriors (13-2) are 11th in the country in scoring margin, winning by an average of 17.1 points a game. Junior guard Shannon Lee is ranked seventh nationally in assists with a 7. 1 average.

Brigham Young-Hawaii also moved up in the rankings, from 23rd to 18th. The Seasiders (11-4) are fourth nationally in team scoring (94.5 ppg) and 3-point field goal percentage (.426), seventh in field goal percentage (.521).

Holding the No. 1 spot again is Birmingham-Southern of Alabama.

EVANS CITED: Brigham Young-Hawaii guard David Evans has been named player of the week for the second time this season by the Hawaii Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The 6-6 sophomore scored a combined 48 points, grabbed 17 rebounds and had 8 steals in last week's victories over Lewis-Clark State and Central Washington. Evans was 9 of 11 from the free throw line and shot 58 percent from the field (19 of 33) in the two games.

VOLLEY 'BOWS NO. 5: The University of Hawaii men's volleyball team is ranked fifth in the first USA Today/AVCA Coaches Top 15 poll of the season.

The Rainbows (2-1) received 168 points. Ahead of Hawaii are Mountain Pacific Sports Federation foes UCLA, Brigham Young, Pepperdine and Long Beach State.

Hawaii opens MPSF play at Southern Cal Friday and Saturday.

WAHINE SIGN BLOCKER: Veronica Lima DaSilva, a 6-foot-2 middle blocker from Brazil, has committed to play for the University of Hawaii women's volleyball team.

DaSilva will have four years to play for the Wahine. The 20-year-old competed for Brazil's World University Games team.

"She's a solid player," said Hawaii coach Dave Shoji, who was seeking to fill the void left with the graduation of all-conference blocker Cia Goods.

RAINBOW BASEBALL PROMOTIONS: The University of Hawaii will have the following promotions during the 1998 Rainbow baseball season.
