
Bring on the tiger! Lunar new year arrives in Chinatown

The streets of Chinatown will be lined with food booths, stages and arts and crafts displays Saturday when AT&T Night in Chinatown celebrates the start of the lunar new year. The festival will run from 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. highlighted by a 4 p.m. parade that starts in front of the State Capitol and continues along Beretania and Richards streets, then onto Hotel Street, ending at Aala Park.
For drivers more interested in knowing which streets will be closed, here's the list:
Maunakea Street (Beretania to King), 5:30 a.m. to midnight.
Pauahi Street (Smith to River), 5:30 a.m. to midnight.
Hotel Street (Richards to River), 10:30 a.m. to midnight.
Richards Street (Beretania to King), 2 to 6 p.m.
The Sun Yat Sen Physical Culture Group will perform a lion dance, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Waikele Center. The festivities will begin with fireworks in the mauka courtyard of the outlet center and the lion will proceed from store to store.
On Saturday night, Narcissus Queen Kit Zhu Lan Lo will be crowned by Gov. Ben Cayetano at the Narcissus Festival Coronation Ball. The event starts at 5 p.m. in the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom and today is the deadline to buy tickets, at $48 per person including dinner. Call 533-3181. Narcissus festivities continue with a celebration at Chinatown Cultural Plaza, 5 to 11 p.m. Jan. 23 and noon to 11 p.m. Jan. 24 .
Lo and her court will also help the Hilton Hawaiian Village celebrate at 6 p.m. Jan. 28. New Year festivities start in the main lobby, where the Chinese Cultural Society will perform a lion dance. The lion will wend its way throughout the 20-acre property. Earlier in the day, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the main lobby, crafters will give fan-painting, calligraphy, paper-cutting and seal-carving demonstrations.
