Vog could continue through the week
The vog which blanketed Oahu over the weekend could last through the week, the National Weather Service said.Kona winds carrying vog from the Big Island's Kilauea Volcano blew in from the southeast, replacing the usual tradewinds, said lead forecaster John Kearns.
Vog carries sulfur compounds that can be irritants. The American Lung Association of Hawaii has warned people with chronic lung disease such as asthma or emphysema as well as those with severe allergies to stay indoors.
Allison Beale, the association's toxicologist and director of environmental health, also advised people to drink plenty of fluids and avoid strenuous exercise.
Kearns said the tradewinds that keep vog away from the other islands are usually more consistent in the summer. The forecast through the week is for light winds and clear, sunny skies.
