Kelsey content at Kapalua
WHEN you consider that Kelsey Grammer is so convincing as the man of ultimate good taste in everything, particularly fine cuisine, the people at the Plantation House at Kapalua must be in heaven. The "Frasier" star, in a fit of generosity over his show's success, brought his wife, mother and cast members Jane Leeves and Peri Gilpin and their families to Maui and they dined at the Plantation four times! (And perhaps to show he can be just one of the guys, Kelsey also dropped into Cheeseburger in Paradise with his bride.) All the "Frasier" family stayed at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua. Incidentally, that hotel's genial G.M., John Toner, had been high on the rumor list to take over as topper of the Kahala Mandarin when Seamus McManus flies off to Merrie Olde England next month, but a Ritz-Carlton spokesman insists he's staying put because there are some things he still wants to accomplish there. He is "hot" in the hotel industry right ...
MORE on the Plantation House, Mick Fleetwood, namesake of the legendary rock band Fleetwood Mac, brought a party of 10 to the restaurant and rather than order off the menu, instructed exec sous chef Greg Layugan to "do his thing." Fleetwood was so impressed with the results that he brought chef Layugan out of the kitchen to be greeted with a standing ovation in the crowded dining room ...
Chicken or egg?
IN its first tabloid format edition, MidWeek, the publication mailed free to homes, published a diatribe from editor Don Chapman, former Advertiser columnist. He mentions a MidWeek feature called "Newsmaker" and says it was "such a good idea, the guys at the afternoon daily recently copied the name and format. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, what's plagiarism?" Chapman, it seems, is unaware that the Star-Bulletin has been running its own "NewsMaker" feature since 1987 - 11 years and counting! Who's plagiarizing whom here? ...WHICH brings us to the online job hunting magazine, Internet Job Source, which has selected what it considers to be the Top 25 online newspapers. You guessed it - there's the Star-Bulletin along with such fellow Top 25'ers as the New York Times, L.A. Times, Chicago Tribune, Boston Globe, etc. You can look into each paper by accessing the list: http://statejobs.com ...
PROMOTER Kimo Wilder McVay is in Kaiser Hospital and will be there about a week following some nether region surgery. He sounded great on the phone and insists he's in good shape (since when?) and it may be that rest will do him more good than the surgery ... Picker of nits Keith Haugen saw "Amistad" and noticed the cane knife in an 1839 scene had a hook on it. He states the hook on the cane knife was invented in Hawaii by a Norwegian, and the Norse first arrived here in 1881 ...
Rooters and Hooters
WITH the Hooters Hula Bowl being played on Maui this year, opportunities to meet some of the college stars here for the game are limited. You can get up close and personal with them Wednesday, Jan. 14, from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Aloha Tower Marketplace, home of Hooters, sponsor of the game. Among those signing autographs will be quarterbacks, like Georgia's Mike Bobo, North Carolina's Chris Keldorf, Nebraska's Scott Frost, Notre Dame's Ron Powlus and Michigan's Brian Griese. Also on hand will be Iowa running back Tavian Banks, Michigan's Chris Howard and UH star Eddie Klaneski ...
