New Year in Moiliili

It's not too late to celebrate the New Year. Join in a community celebration Saturday when the 6th annual New Year's Festival in Moiliili takes place at the Old Stadium Park and Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii.

After opening ceremonies from 8:45 to 9 a.m., activities will continue to 4 p.m. There will be a craft fair, exhibitions, food vendors, children's games and entertainment.

Some of the highlights follow:

Japanese sword display by the Japanese Sword Society of Hawaii, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in JCCH Weinberg Building room 102.

Kimekomi doll making display and demonstration by Michiko Nakase, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Weinberg Building room 102.

New Year's customs and childrens' activities, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the JCCH Resource Center Lanai, ground floor.

Mochi-pounding demonstration by the Tenrikyo Hawaii Dendocho, 11:15 a.m. to noon in the JCCH courtyard.

Cooking demonstration by Mark T. Okamura, pastry chef for Alan Wong's Restaurant, noon to 1 p.m. in JCCH Heritage I, 5th floor.

Obi-tying demonstration presented by the University Lab School Kimono Program and Mizushima International, 1 to 1:45 p.m. in JCCH Heritage II, 5th floor.

Storytelling by Arnold Hiura and Glen Grant, 1: 45 to 2:15 p.m. in Heritage I, 5th floor.

Taiko performance and traditional "Japanese Lion Dance of Edo," featuring Kenny Endo, 2:30 to 3 p.m. in Heritage I, 5th floor.

Start your engines

More than 300 new 1998 vehicles, including the updated Volkswagen Beetle, will rev up the Neal Blaisdell Center Arena and Exhibition Halls during the First Hawaiian Bank Auto Show Friday through Sunday.

The show runs from noon to 9 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. tomorrow; and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

At least two people will be able to drive away in a new car if they draw the lucky keys which unlock a 1998 Nissan Frontier XE 4X2 truck donated by the Nissan Motor Corporation of Hawaii; or a 1998 Suzuki Esteem GL Wagon, donated by Suzuki Hawaii.

One car will be given away at 7 p.m. Saturday, the other at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Admission to the event is free.



Wild west party

Grab your partner and head on down to a Western Night Round-Up at Waipahu High School's cafeteria Jan. 31.

The 6:30 to 11 p.m. event will be hosted by the American Cancer Society's Central Leeward Unit to raise funds for Hawaii's cancer patients.

The fund-raising event will feature dinner, entertainment, line-dancing instruction and a silent auction featuring items such as trail rides, rounds of golf, art work and dinners at fine restaurants.

Tickets are $25 per person and available by calling the society at 486-8420.
