Peck Sim's close predicted

BACK in July of last year I wrote "... keep your eye on Peck Sims Mueller." The item went on to say that "Don Mueller, who's been running things, has cleaned out his desk, and Sandy Sims, who's been spending his time on the Big Isle, has been a daily commuter to the office." Mueller's response at the time was to fax me a photo of him reading my column at his desk with a note, "Although cleaning out my desk could be considered newsworthy (I do it every five years, whether it needs it or not), let me reassure you that I am still actively involved in the agency and contributing to our clients' business as a resource for strategic thinking and creative problem solving." Good response, only now they'll have to look elsewhere - the agency has officially folded ...

HAWAII'S Miss Chinatown, Jodi Leong, stopped by Havana Cabana at Nuuanu and Pauahi the other night, but not to puff on a stogie. She'd just been next door at the Hawaii Theatre taking in "Stomp" with Cabana president Brian Uy, and besides, it's almost in Chinatown. She's off to represent Hawaii in the national Miss Chinatown contest next month in San Francisco ... When former Dodger great Don Sutton was notified he'd been inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame, he was wearing a Lodge at Koele shirt. It came as no surprise to Lodge G.M. Kurt Matsumoto and wife Lyn. Sutton is a regular visitor to the upcountry Lanai resort ...

Back to the '70s

AFTER doing a report on the resurgence of UH basketball this year, Channel 8 did a little retrospective of the "Fabulous Five" including an interview with John Pennebacker and showing photos of the "fro" hairdo he wore back then. He admitted that his kids, looking at some of the old photos, didn't recognize him. Then it showed a photo of clean-shaven anchorman Dan Cooke, Mr. Clean Personified, taken with Artie Wilson back in the '70s. Whoa! With a beard and hair out-to-here, Cooke looked like he'd just climbed off Ken Kesey's bus ... Speaking of which, S.F. Deadheads are planning a $60 million amusement park dedicated to the Grateful Dead. This has prompted wags to come up with suggestions for the park such as signs reading "Keep On the Grass" and "Murine World." ...

A READER asks about the cost of that bottle of 1961 Chateau Latour purchased by former Leilehua Mule football star Tom Kincaid at Aqua during his holiday stay here. It set him back $3,000, a tidy sum even for a self-made millionaire ... They feature fireworks every Friday night at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, but the stars didn't collide when both Paul Anka and Tony Bennett were guesting there. Anka was in the Rainbow Tower and Bennett in the Tapa Tower for their respective New Year's Eve shows in Honolulu ...

THE current Time magazine (and just about everyone else) is wondering what spin-off, if any, will come once "Seinfeld" ends this, its final year. Nobody has suggested it that I've seen, but a natural would be "The Costanzas," about George Costanza (Jason Alexander) and his dysfunctional parents, played by Jerry Stiller and Estelle Young ...

Playgirl's dream

DON'T get the wrong idea about Tom Selleck. The former "Magnum, P.I." star is featured in the current Playgirl magazine, but it's more newsy than nosy and not one of those male nude pictorials. In fact, beginning this month, Playgirl is looking more like, say, Redbook, with features on Personal Technology, Tips for Working Women, Legal Matters and Fashion ...
