Celebrating the mele

In the second installation of its "Celebrate Our Heritage" series, KHET airs two encore presentations documenting the evolution and diversity of today's Hawaiian music.

"Mele Hawaii: Hymns Become Hawaiian" airs at 7 p.m. Saturday, followed by "Mele Hawaii: The Kalakaua Family" at 7:30 p.m.

The late Charles K.L. Davis is featured in the first program, which showed the missionaries' influence on music.

The Kalakaua program celebrates the musical legacy of Hawaii's last ruling family. King David Kalakaua, Prince William Pitt Leleiohoku II, Princess Miriam Kapili Cleghorn and Queen Liliuokalani are the composers honored.

Listen to Laws

Jazz saxophonist Ronnie Laws performs 8 p.m. nightly, Saturday through Monday, at Gussie L'Amours. The former Earth Wind & Fire member will be joined by singer Azure McCall.

Laws has had seven solo albums on the Billboard album chart, and his album "Friends and Strangers" went gold.

An advance pass, which entitles the purchaser to attend all three performances, is $10. At the door, admission is $12 per show. For information, call 836-7883.

Gussie L'Amours is at 3251 N. Nimitz Highway.
