Coach Vince Goo had good news for his University of Hawaii women's basketball team before yesterday's practice. Goo announced that the team's grade point average for the fall semester was 3.27. Good news for Wahine
"Twelve of our 14 ladies were 3.0 or better," Goo said. "We expect nobody to be under 3.0 so I'm going to have to meet with two players to see what happened."
The overall GPA wasn't elevated by players with 4.0, either, as was the case last year when Kendis Leeburg, Tiffany Fujimoto and Michelle Macintyre all hit that mark.
Goo was pleased that the team had collectively done better and it comes in the semester when the Wahine load up with tougher classes. "We do it that way because practice doesn't start until mid-semester and we don't travel during the semester," he said.
Goo also told his team that it was ranked 28th in the USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Poll, up two spots from last week, was up one step to No. 32 in the AP Top 25 and was No. 22 in the CollegeSportsNewsDaily.Com Top 35 Poll.
The big surprise was a No. 6 ranking in the Ratings Performance Index (RPI) compiled for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. The RPI, a formula that relies on strength of schedule, is used by the NCAA tournament committee in making selections.
USA Today listed the top 10: 1. Washington. 2. Old Dominion. 3. Florida International. 4. Connecticut. 5. Texas Tech. 6. Hawaii. 7. Tennessee. 8. Utah. 9. Southwest Missouri State. 10. American University.
GIVE WARRIORS A CHEER: The Kamehameha High School Varsity Cheerleading Squad placed second in the Small Varsity Division at the World Cheerleaders Association National Competition in Nashville, Tennessee Monday and yesterday. The team competed against 25 other squads in its division. Head Coach of the team is Dolly Wong.
