Although Karyn Inafuku achieved wonder-student status, she became a leader this year for learning the importance of taking a stand. Advancing in leadership
The Hanalani faculty voted Inafuku to represent the school in the national Principal's Leadership Award Scholarship Program, which offers 150 students a $1,000 scholarship. "She was the natural choice," said Principal Wayne Yoshino. "Karyn has displayed consistency, efficiency and responsibility throughout her high school years."
Inafuku has been junior and senior class vice president, yearbook editor, basketball team captain for two years, volleyball team co-captain for three years, National Honor Society member and athlete of the year.
But of all her accomplishments, Inafuku said she's most proud of getting to know her senior class. "I mean I really got to know them. I realized we didn't have much time left in school together, and I didn't know them well. I'm glad I did."
She learned to act as an individual from her favorite business teacher, Robert Araki. "Mr. Araki taught us how to self-evaluate," Inafuku explained. "Every few months we describe our attributes and flaws, rate them, then write a description on how to improve. I improved in taking a stand for what I believe in and going for it."
Araki said he has watched Inafuku grow in her senior year. "Karyn has become a true leader," he said. "She leads by her actions."
