
Hawaii Public Television showcases some of the best of Hawaii's dance, music, art and storytelling in the 13-part series, "Celebrate Our Heritage." The series reprises beloved programs from the station's 25-year history. KHET honors our culture
"Celebrate Our Heritage" premieres Jan. 3 with encore presentations of two programs from the "Mele Hawaii" series. "Chants: Hawaii's Unwritten Poetry," will air at 7 p.m., followed by "Hapa Haole Hula" at 7:30 p.m.
In "Chants," Kaupena Wong explains the significance of chants as a means of recording genealogy and historic events, as well as a means of intimate expression.
The late Charles K.L. Davis hosted "Hapa Haole Hula," examining the origins of this 1940s-era musical marriage of Hawaiian-style melody and English lyrics. The program features appearances by a variety of artists, including a spirited performance by Hilo Hattie.
