Easy victory for HPU

J.J. Lucas led the way with 20 points, while Willie Flowers had his first career double-double as Hawaii Pacific University beat Lee University, 89-70, last night in a men's college basketball game at Blaisdell Arena.

Flowers had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Sea Warriors, ranked No. 5 in the NAIA.

Cordell Ray came off the bench to score 15 points for the Sea Warriors. The junior college transfer had scored one point all season coming into the game.

Hawaii Pacific improved to 7-1, while Lee University fell to 5-7.

Chang's one shot wins
Football Fever final weekly prize

Ronald Chang caught Football Fever when it first broke out and has been taking two shots at each weekly prize ever since.

But he needed just one shot in last week's 1997 contest finale to hit the bull's-eye.

Chang picked up a $500 holiday prize with a perfect 10-for-10 on NFL games.

"I missed entering for the first time the week before," he said last night. "I didn't look in the paper because I thought it was over. Then I happened to see the entry form again last Tuesday and went ahead and sent it in.

"I always sent in two entries, from the Monday and Tuesday papers. This was the first time I sent in just one."

Chang, a 57-year-old U.S. Postal Service worker from Manoa, said the prize money will take him and his family out for dinner and buy them a few extra Christmas gifts.

To qualify for the drawing for the cash, Chang had to equal or better the best record by the celebrity panel. That record was 9-1, for Star-Bulletin sportswriter Cindy Luis.

UH's Carter, Cockett
on WAC's honor roll

Anthony Carter and Nani Cockett, sparkplugs of the University of Hawaii's men's and women's basketball teams, have been named the Western Athletic Conference Pacific Division players of the week for Dec. 15-21.

Carter averaged 20 points, 8.5 rebounds and 7.5 assists as the Rainbows won the Nike Festival with two victories last weekend.

Cockett averaged 25 points, 9.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists as the Wahine won twice in the Paradise Classic.

IOLANI WRESTLERS PREVAIL: Iolani edged MacLoughlin of Oregon by 3-1/2 points to win the largest Maui Invitational Wrestling Tournament ever last weekend at the Lahaina Civic Center.

A record 353 wrestlers from 27 high schools tangled in 650 matches Friday and Saturday.

Iolani had three individual champions -- Landon Toma, 112 pounds; Ken Kakesako, 119; Nick Muraoka, 135 -- in outpointing MacLoughlin, 218.5-215.0.

Third-place Pendleton of Oregon had the tournament's two outstanding wrestlers -- Casey Hunt in the lower-weight division and Ben Arbogast in the upper-weight class.
