Name: Shelley Williams
Age: 18
School: St. Andrew's Priory
Activities: Speech team captain, drama, honor student
Interests: Theater, amateur radio
Shelley Williams wants to become a staff lawyer with the Federal Communications Commission because the job combines her favorite interests -- speech and communication, and amateur radio. Blending radio, law, drama
Williams became interested in amateur radio through her father, a ham radio enthusiast.
"I enjoy saying hello to someone halfway around the world," she said.
Her interest inspired her to get an amateur radio license and led to a science project last year on the "Ionosphere and Solar Flux and Other Solar Phenomenon's Effect on Radio Communications." The project won first place in the school competition, and best in category at the state science fair.
Williams is an honor student, but was getting B's in science until she started taking amateur radio seriously. Now she gets A's and won the school science fair again this year.
Another interest is drama.
She has been involved in school productions since the eighth grade.
Williams said she didn't want to be involved at first because she had heard horror stories about the long hours of rehearsal
But, she said, "it really drew me in and now I'm the one organizing the plays.
Williams' interest in law was confirmed when she was chosen for a student leadership institute on the subject at Stanford University this summer.
