No sugarplums
for SF secondary

THE last regular season games of the NFL are history, and while some were crucial -- Detroit beating the Jets gave them a playoff berth -- others were meaningless. So it was with the San Francisco 49ers, who have lots of fans locally. One of them, however, was unconcerned that they'd already wrapped up a playoff spot and home field advantage. Singer Jimmy Borges, a longtime 'Niner fan and former resident of Baghdad-by-the-Bay, says he's wrapping up some Christmas charcoal to send to the 49er secondary, figuring it'll come in handy if they keep getting burned like they did against Seattle. Borges says he now thinks Green Bay will "kick butt" if they play the 'Niners in the playoffs. Many local bettors put their money on S.F. despite the coach's announced plans to rest his veterans most of the game. But the New York Times believed him -- their expert predicted a Seattle whomping, and that's just what happened ...

ARCHITECT Des Brooks and wife Pauline are back from their Australia digs for another visit to their former home. The two, who've been on yet another luxury cruise, were asking about different old friends, only to hear again and again, "Gone. Gone. Gone." The two latest were painter John Young and ex-D.J. Sam Sanford who both died over the weekend. Brooks acknowledged that, "Folks are thinning out a bit." ... Another person who's aware of that is Jeff Apaka of the Waikiki Community Association, whom I bumped into last week. He ran down a list of funerals he had to attend this month ...

ANOTHER recent isle visitor was Holger Gossman, former Mercedes-Benz salesman locally. For the past nine years he has been in Hong Kong where he's G.M. of MD Motors, which handles sales of Rolls Royce and Bentley in the former Crown Colony. And no matter what government is in charge, people there gravitate toward luxury autos. Gossman, a Germany native, is married to a Chinese professor ...

Varied Merry Christmas

PROMOTER Tom Moffatt is nothing if not eclectic in the selection of acts he presents in Hawaii. You know by now he's bringing in the Rolling Stones for the geriatric "Bridges to Babylon" tour next month. And before that it'll be somebody even older than the Stones (though he doesn't look it) in Tony Bennett. The singer will perform Dec. 29 at the Hilton Waikoloa and then on New Year's Eve at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. (The other day Moffatt ran across a caricature of himself that Bennett had done for his birthday in 1985. He signed it "Tony Bennett" which is unusual since he normally signs his artwork "Anthony Benedetti," his real name ... And lastly, Moffatt is presenting comic Howie Mandel Friday at the Sheraton Waikiki's Hawaii Ballroom. The comic flew in on his private jet and then dashed off to Maui to vacation a bit before doing his show. He'll likewise travel by his personal jet when he does shows on Kauai Saturday, Maui Sunday and Kona on Tuesday ...

Sellers' cellars

THERE were some familiar faces on Nuuanu near Hotel Street the other night. I mean, who'd have expected to gander at Sen. Dan Inouye, Don Ho and DHHL boss Kali Watson all under the same roof near the downtown HPD substation? They're all part of the retrospective of Tom Sellers artwork that he dredged up, most of it created as graphic designs for Sellers' advertising agency. The display is on view through Jan. 9 at a gallery in Indigo Restaurant ...
