


2 boa constrictors turned in on Big Island
Two boa constrictors were turned in to the Hawaii Island Humane Society South Kohala Shelter Wednesday.The 2-foot-long reptiles were sent to Honolulu yesterday for safeguarding at the plant quarantine station while awaiting shipment out of state.
The snakes were turned in under the amnesty program of the state Department of Agriculture. No penalties will be assessed.
Individuals with illegal pets are encouraged to turn them in under the amnesty program.
Anyone with information or knowledge about illegal animals here is asked to call the Pest Hotline at 586-PEST (7378).
Grand jury indicts felon in Oahu shooting death
The court has set bail at $500,000 for a convicted felon who allegedly shot a man in the back of the head Aug. 7 in Waipahu.An Oahu grand jury yesterday indicted James L.K. Kane III for second-degree murder for allegedly causing the death of Lah-Hah-Bate-Soot, a 25-year-old man also known as Larry Red Eagle.
The indictment also charges Kane, also known as "Preschool," with firearms charges, including being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Kane, 19, was at Oahu Community Correctional Center on unrelated terroristic threatening and firearms charges when police arrested him for allegedly killing Red Eagle.
A Tacoma, Wash., native, Red Eagle had lived in Hawaii about six months before his death.
Officials had classified Kane a serous juvenile offender who had 41 arrests as a juvenile and eight arrests as an adult.
2 first to be sentenced under federal drug law
Two men indicted on drug charges are the first in Hawaii to face increased penalties because of a federal law prohibiting the use of minors in drug trafficking, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.Tracy Spencer, 32, and Anthony Glimane Jr., 43, were indicted by a federal grand jury yesterday for distributing crystal methamphetamine, or "ice," between Nov. 3 and Dec. 11.
Spencer was charged with distributing the drug six times during that period, with Glimane charged in three of the occasions.
Federal prosecutors said the men, on two of the counts, face twice the ordinary maximum penalty if convicted, or up to 80 years on each count.
U.S. Attorney Steven Alm said two youths, ages 16 and 17, were involved in transfering the drugs and helping distribute them.
A third man in the case, Randy D.M. Wong, 27, was charged with the two men of conspiring to distribute the drug.

Police this morning arrested a Makaha man for allegedly stabbing and critically injuring two of his housemates.The suspect, 21, and his girlfriend, 18, got into an argument at their Lahaina Street house at 1:28 a.m., police said.
The suspect grabbed a steak knife from the kitchen and allegedly cut the woman, who is seven months pregnant, across the neck.
A 23-year-old man, who also resides at the home, was allegedly stabbed in the rib cage when he attempted to help the woman, police said.
The suspect was arrested on two counts of attempted murder.
The male victim was in critical condition at Queen's Hospital this morning. The woman was in fair condition.
Suspect lowered car onto man underneath
Police are searching for a 37-year-old man who allegedly attempted to kill a man who was repairing a vehicle in Kaimuki yesterday.The victim, 35, was underneath the car when the suspect lowered the jack, police said.
The victim was not injured from the vehicle because of the jack's safety mechanism.
The suspect, who accused the victim of "fooling around with his ex-girlfriend," allegedly attacked the victim with a knife, police said.
The victim, from Waipahu, was taken to Queen's Hospital and treated for a 5-inch cut on his forearm.
Kaneohe man accused of raping tourist
Police yesterday arrested a Kaneohe man for allegedly raping and robbing a Japanese tourist next to the convention center.The victim, 27, agreed to take a walk around the convention center with the suspect, 29, after meeting him in a bar, police said.
The man then allegedly forced the woman to the ground, took her Rolex watch and raped her at about 4:30 a.m. yesterday.
The suspect was arrested for first-degree sexual assault, kidnapping and second-degree robbery.
Police dismantle bomb found in parking lot
The police bomb squad yesterday dismantled a homemade explosive device that was found in the parking lot of a Waipahu gas station.The bomb was recovered at 6:55 a.m. at the Chevron at 94-380 Mokuola Street, police said.
The bomb was taken to the police training center on Waipahu Depot Road and was safely dismantled.
Police reports indicate that the bomb was powerful enough to cause "serious bodily injury in the area of 10 to 15 feet."
Police are still investigating the incident.
No arrests have been made as of this morning.
Murder suspect faces three drug charges, too
KAILUA-KONA -- A man arrested in the shooting death of another man Wednesday has been released in that case, but has been charged with three drug offenses and continues to be held in lieu of $2,050 bail, police said.Police are continuing to investigate the possible connection of Bert Alani Corderio, 38, of Keauhou Mauka, to the shooting death of Leonard Kala, 51, of Holualoa, they said.
Stove fire destroys house in Fern Acres
HILO -- A fire caused by an unattended stove destroyed a house in the rural Fern Acres subdivision at noon yesterday, the Fire Department said.Damage to the home, owned and occupied by Dana Fields, was put at $140,000.
Firefighters were able to save a separate structure used as a carport and workshop valued at $40,000.
There were no injuries.
