women's titleRecord-breaking performances highlighted the 4th edition of the Nike P.L.A.Y. Waikiki Mile today on Kalakaua Avenue. Canada's Graham Hood won his second straight title in 3 minutes, 55.66 seconds, shattering Marc Davis' 1994 course record of 3:57.54.
Hood led seven other men through the road mile in under 4 minutes. The eight sub-4 performances equalled the number of times that feat was achieved in the first three years of the Waikiki Mile.
Hood won here in 3:59.00 last year.
"I was just feeling so strong over the last 400 meters," said Hood. "I wasn't even worried about other guys coming up on me."
Regina Jacobs won her second women's title in three years by eclipsing the course record set only last year by Ireland's Sonia O'Sullivan. Jacobs, the seven-time ntional 1,500-meter champion, clocked 4:26.05, beating the O'Sullvan mark by 38-hundredths of a second.
Jacobs came in 1.29 seconds ahead of Canada's Leah Pell (Coquitlam, B.C.). She won here in 1995 in 4:30.48.
Both Hood and Jacobs pocketed $18,000 cash their victories.
The fields were composed of 12 men and 13 women.
