Man arrested in Red Eagle murder case
Police have arrested an inmate in connection with the murder of Larry Red Eagle, who was found dead Aug. 7 with a gunshot wound to the back of his head.Detectives said new evidence was found which led to the arrest of the Waikiki man yesterday.
The suspect, 19, was at the Oahu Community Correctional Center on unrelated terroristic threatening and firearms charges when the arrest was made, police said.
He was questioned following the murder, but police did not have enough evidence to arrest him then, said Lt. William Kato of the Criminal Investigations Division.
The suspect has not been charged yet. Police said they are looking for one other suspect.
Detectives said Red Eagle, 25, was seen drinking with a group of men shortly before he boarded a bus in the Pupukahi Street area of Waipahu at about 11 p.m. Aug. 6.
A group of teens found his body about two hours later on a Waipio Point Access Road bridge.
Police said the suspect has a lengthy juvenile and adult criminal record.
H-3 traffic below capacity
The Halawa-bound side of the new H-3 Freeway appears to be more popular with drivers than lanes going to Kaneohe. From 5 a.m. to 6 a.m. today, the highway averaged about 800 cars Kaneohe-bound and 1,770 Halawa-bound, said state Transportation spokeswoman Marilyn Kali.
Traffic averaged about 1,500 cars each way from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., she said.
"We're expecting a busy day," she said.
No count was taken the first couple hours after the highway opened at 1:35 p.m. yesterday because traffic was needed to calibrate the sensors, she said.
During the rush period, from about 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., she said the highway averaged 2,000 cars an hour headed toward Halawa and 1,600 an hour to Kaneohe. That's only about half of capacity, Kali said, noting the freeway is designed for 2,000 cars per hour per lane.
The first H-3 incident occurred about an hour after it opened, she said. A car had a flat tire just outside the portal of the Halawa-bound tunnel.
The incident response vehicle was there within two minutes, she said. It has an electronic arrow board on the back to warn motorists something happened and is able to provide water or fuel or push cars off the road if necessary.
Isle Pop Warner team loses in national title game
ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Koolauloa Red Raiders Pop Warner football team came up just shy of a national championship today, falling to the Pleasant Grove (Texas) Trojans, 13-12, in the Junior Pee Wee division title game. The Oahu team is comprised of boys 8 to 10 years old from the Laie-Kahuku area. The Red Raiders won state and regional championships before advancing to the nationals. On Wednesday, they defeated Mid America, a team from the Chicago area, 19-8. The Red Raiders finished the season with an 11-1 record.
"Never in my dreams did I ever think we'd be here, in Florida, playing for the national championship," coach Brian Teo told the team after the game. "I'm so proud of all of you. We didn't have a lot of things that the other teams had. We may be living on saimin, but we got here.
"So keep your heads up high. You're the pride of the North Shore. Don't ever forget that. You're going to have bragging rights for the next 29,000 years of your life."
The Red Raiders scored first, taking a 6-0 lead on quarterback Waika Carvalho's 60 yard run. But the Trojans led, 13-6, at halftime.
Teo said the Red Raiders dominated the second half. M.J. Ngatikaura's 10-yard touchdown run made the score 13-12 in the third quarter, but turnovers kept the Red Raiders from scoring further.
Teo said the tenacity and solid play of the Red Raiders made quite an impression on teams from the mainland. "They were saying that they hadn't been hit like that before," Teo said.
He said the boys were naturally disappointed by the loss, but took satisfaction in their successful season.
"They're over it already," Teo said. "No one can take this away from them. They're great kids."
