


University of Hawaii defensive back Chris Shinnick was a first-team defensive selection on the GTE Academic All-America football team announced yesterday. UHs Shinnick
Academic All-AmericanShinnick a 5-foot-11, 201-pound senior from Van Nuys, Calif., is a communications major with a 3.87 grade point average. He was the Rainbows' second-leading tackler with 126 stops and had two pass interceptions.
Tennessee quarterback Peyton Manning was the player of the year among the Academic All-Americans, who were selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
LEE TOP RACQUETBALL WINNER: Joe Lee defeated Mel Conjugacion, 11-6, 11-8, 3-11, 11-5, to win the men's open racquetball title in the first annual Hawaiian Christmas Open at the Honolulu Club on Sunday.
Lee also won the doubles crown when he teamed with John Poggi in a 15-10, 11-15, 11-4 victory over Norman Akau and Paul Morse.
Ann Wert and Kerri Loo also were double winners.
Wert won the women's open trophy and teamed with Jody Yotsuda to capture the doubles title. Loo took the women's B championship and partnered with Jody Higa for the B/C crown.
Other winners were: men's singles: Scott Bloom (A), Byron Souza, (B) Frank Lee (C), N.J. Norwood (masters), Randy Sukisaki (novice); men's doubles: Randy Cadiente-Ian Benson (B/C), Mark Maehara-Drake Beil (masters); women's singles: Mary Collins (C).
In the squash competition, David Lam won the men's A title. Mandy Rawlins was the women's champion. Other winners were Arsenio Tejada (men's B), Bob Rooks (men's C) and Alex Tento (men's novice).
HAWAII PACIFIC NO. 5: Hawaii Pacific University dropped two spots to No. 5 in this week's NAIA Division I men's basketball ratings after an 86-77 loss to NCAA Division II power Cal State-Bakersfield ended the Sea Warriors' best-ever (5-0) getaway.
Birmingham-Southern (8-0) climbed into the No. 1 spot from No. 4 in the preseason poll. Phillips, Okla., (12-0) vaulted from No. 14 to No. 2; Georgetown, Ky. (12-0) was third and Life, Ga. (5-1), which topped the preseason ratings, dropped to fourth.
Hawaii Pacific received one first-place vote and had 386 total points.
Also receiving votes was BYU-Hawaii, with 27 total points.
PRO BOWLING BIGGIE AT HICKAM: The Professional Bowlers Association's National Resident Pro Championship will be contested tomorrow through Saturday at Hickam Bowling Center on the Air Force base.
Eight pros from each of the PBA's seven regions will compete in the Ebonite International-sponsored event. The winner gets a berth in the 1998 Brunswick World Tournament of Champions.
Pro-ams are scheduled for Friday at 4 and 6 p.m.
BIG ISLAND WOMEN'S TOURNEY: Mississippi State, Nevada, Oregon and Washington State will go to the hoop in the fourth annual Kona Women's Basketball Classic Dec. 19-21 at the Kailua-Kona Gymnasium.
On Dec. 19, Oregon and Mississippi State play at 5 p.m., Nevada and Washington State at 7:15. On Dec. 20, Nevada plays Mississippi State at 5 p.m. and Washington State meets Oregon at 7:15. On Dec. 21, Oregon plays Nevada at 10 a.m. and Mississippi State plays Washington State at 12:15 p.m.
